Windows 8 Editions

All editions of Windows 8 offer a no-compromise experience.

Unless of course you're upgrading from Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate and just want Windows 8. Or if you feel nickel and aimed by having to buy Windows Media Center as an "economical add-on pack" which is only available to Windows 8 Pro customers.

And that's not to mention the security features only found on Windows 8 Pro.

But hey, they say "you'll love it."

5 Ways Windows 8 Is Better Than iOS and Android (via @wired)

In fact, it’s an OS-wide theme of Windows 8′s Metro UI. There are no menu bars, task bars, or navigational buttons permanently pinned to the display.

As a follow up to an earlier post, Wired has a nice overview of Windows 8's innovative new features. Although I agree that it looks better without the menu bars etc., I think that's going to be a steep learning curve for the average user.

But it's certainly going to make us rethink how we're designing for the web a year from now. Having no chrome (the window border, buttons and address bar area) on a browser window changes the frame of what we're building.

Windows 8 consumer preview (via @gruber)

Media_httpres2windows_oqisp

Microsoft totally rethought how Windows works. I think it's pretty snazzy. Lots of the controls and gestures are like those stupid future vision videos plaguing the web. But in this case they're real.

There Should Be an App Store for Desktop Software

I have Windows 7 installed on my iMac. It's basically so I can play Left 4 Dead (and soon, Left 4 Dead 2).

One of the things I noted is the use of Valve's "Steam" software as the method for getting games. It's very much like the App Store on an iPhone, but carries just the Valve product line.

Because of Steam I've downloaded, played and subsequently purchased two other games from Valve (Champions Online and Team Fortress 2).

I think there should be something like this for desktop software, but a store for any publisher. It'd be a way better way to get apps and keep them up to date.
