Twitter Makes Me Think About How I Write

November 6th, 2008

I don’t really use my Twitter page the way it was intended. It’s more like a passive chat-room experience for me. I also like to post my frustrations with things there.

An interesting side effect of using Twitter for that purpose, however, is it forces me to be concise in what I say. For example, when dealing with a rather cumbersome IT team powered website at work recently, I thought about how web sites are marketing territory, not IT territory. The result was a rant that was too long for Twitter, and as such I had to bring it down to the mandatory 140 characters:

I hate IT Teams in charge of corporate websites. They spend all their time on “systems” and none on making the website useful to its target.

So thanks, Twitter, for making me think about how I write online.

Writing good web copy is on my mind this week. I suggest checking out this article on AListApart about writing good copy.
